DESIGN MODIFICATIONS OF A FRICTION TEST RIG FOR HIGH VACUUM AND ELEVATED TEMPERATURE OPERATION.

Abstract

This program deals with the parametric evaluation of wear-life factors, friction coefficients, and a search for dry film lubricant materials for lubrication of bearings operable in vacuum and elevated temperature environments. One of the most critical factors in the use of dry film lubricants in vacuum and at elevated temperatures is their wear-life. Normally, one also finds that low friction is mandatory, with an ideal maximum of about 0.1 for the friction coefficient. This report describes the mechanical components, and operation of a friction tester, design highlites, calibration and measuring methods, and theoretical background of the involved physical forces of friction and their derivation from a mechanical-electronic measuring system. In order to obtain an acceptable level of measuring accuracy, combined with the flexibility and capability of the test equipment, a number of improvements and modifications were necessary during the reporting time.
