FIRE-RESISTANT HYDRAULIC FLUID FOR SUBMARINES.

Abstract

Synthesis and evaluation data on three classes of phosphorus esters as possible base stocks for fireresistant hydraulic fluids for submarines are reported. The classes are: phosphates, phosphinates, and phosphoramidates. They were evaluated for fire resistance (AIT, 1300. molten metal test, flash and fire points); fluid properties (viscosities, ASTM slopes, pour points); and compatibility with paint, ring seals, and electrical conduit sheathing presently used in submarines. Detailed structure/property correlations are presented for the three classes. Fluorine-containing phosphoramidates have been synthesized that possess better ASTM slopes and far superior paint and elastomer compatibility than MIL-H-19457, while retaining fire resistance comparable to MIL-H-19457.
