EXPERIMENTAL METHOD FOR TESTING MATERIALS IN BIAXIAL STRESS FIELDS,

Abstract

A simple method has been devised to investigate material characteristics under various biaxial stress conditions by using commercially available equipment and inexpensive specimens. The specimen employed is a cylindrical pressure vessel which can be subjected simultaneously to end load and pressure. Various ratios of axial-to-circumferential stress can be obtained while both stresses are being increased to specimen failure. Biaxial stress-strain relations are obtained from autographic recordings of axial and circumferential strains as a function of end load and pressure. Included are detailed descriptions of specimen configuation, test setup (instrumentation), pretest calibration procedures and equations, and data interpretation. (Author)
