EFFECTS OF THUNDERSTORMS ON TFSO OPERATIONS, 1964.

Abstract

During the period from 24 June to 14 September 1964, there were thirteen thunderstorms which caused damage to TFSO instrumentation. All but four of the eighty-eight seismograph systems were damaged by from one to eight of the storms. The extent of the damage per storm ranged from 2% to 56% of the seismometer circuits. With a few exceptions which are noted below, damage was confined to the lightning protection devices, i.e., fuses and carbon block spark gaps. Damage is tabulated.
