COMPARISON OF EXTENDED POLYETHYLENE AND CHRYSOTILE ASBESTOS FRACTURE SURFACES.
Abstract
Consideration was given to two substances, chrysotile asbestos and extended-chain polyethylene, which differ widely in their chemical composition and in the size of their fundamental fibrous units. Yet their internal morphology, as evidenced by the structure of their fracture surfaces, shows marked similarity. Although the analysis reported do not prove that fracture in these substances proceeds via a random walk-like propagation mechanism, the fracture surfaces are in agreement with such an assumption.
