CHEMILUMINESCENT SYSTEMS

Abstract

Major emphasis was placed upon the screening program for chemiluminescent autoxidation reactions. Weak chemiluminescence was observed for almost all basecatalyzed reactions in aprotic solvents. The brightest visible emissions observed thus far have been the oxidations of benzoin and of 2-benzylimidazoline. The luminescence of lucigenin in alkaline peroxide oxidation in mixed solvents was studied as a function of THF concentration. Within the bounds determined by product precipitation, the peak intensity, total emission 'figure-ofmerit', and decay rate increase with THF concentration. Striking correlation was observed between the decay half-lives of the chemiluminescence of the lucigenin solution and of the lucigenin-free solution at the same reagent levels.
