ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF WEAPON SYSTEM MODIFICATIONS BY FIELD STUDY: A FEASIBILITY DEMONSTRATION

Abstract

Studies have been made on ways to increase the productivity of the Air Force maintenance management system. These studies have suggested adding clock-hours and status data to the current data system (AFM 66-1, Maintenance Management), and have proposed the use of computers in maintenance management and analysis. These additions have made practicable analyses of maintenance data that were heretofore deemed impossible. The memorandum continues the previous line of inquiry. It demonstrates how these adjuncts to the present system may be used to assess the cost and effectiveness of engineering modifications. The procedures are described using two examples: an engine modification of T-38A aircraft, and a fire-control system modification of F-101B aircraft. The two procedures are then contrasted to show how the combination of methods can provide the most meaningful set of data. It is shown how the method of recording and analyzing may also be used to provide a history of the installation-checkout process during this vital period.
