STORM RADAR DATA PROCESSOR EVALUATION.

Abstract

A comprehensive evaluation of the Storm Radar Data Processor (STRADAP) system was made in order to determine its capabilities, accuracy, reliability, and limitations and to make recommendations for product improvement modifications which would advance STRADAP to an accurate meteorological instrument. In order to properly evaluate and improve the operating characteristics and reliability, two phases of evaluation were performed: analysis and evaluation of the hardware and theoretical or mathematical analysis of the concepts utilized. The hardware analysis consists in testing, through the use of standard test equipment and under normal operating conditions, individual circuits, logic blocks, and the entire system to ensure correct function, tolerances, accuracy, and reliability. As a result of this evaluation, modifications deemed necessary were designed, fabricated, installed, and checked out. Math analysis was performed to evaluate the sampling techniques and averaging techniques used by STRADAP, as well as the capability of the input radar video to provide sufficiently accurate information to allow STRADAP to accomplish the conversion to an accurate digital representation of cloud and storm formations within the range of the radar.
