LOW TEMPERATURE POLYMERIZATION STUDIES.

Abstract

The report contains results on the polymerization or attempted polymerization of the following monomers by gamma radiation at reduced temperatures: acrylonitrile, vinyl fluoride, vinyl chloride, allyl cyanide, chloral, and hexafluoroacetone. Since the last reporting period, work has continued to determine the causes of the erratic rates obtained in the radiation-induced polymerization of acrylonitrile at -74C and 720,000 rads per hour. In addition, the gamma ray initiated polymerization of vinylidene fluoride, vinyl fluoride, vinyl chloride and 3-butene nitrile (allyl cyanide) at -72 to -74C has been examined. New work was also started on the radiationinitiated polymerization of carbonyl compounds. The two monomers thur far studied were chloral and hexafluoro-acetone.
