VARIATIONAL PROBLEM OF ESCAPE FROM CIRCULAR ORBIT,

Abstract

A precise solution of the variational problem of escape of a space vehicle with a continuously operating engine is presented. It is demonstrated that the escape time from a circular orbit using tangential thrust differs by less than one per cent from the time obtained from a precise solution of the variational problem. Lawden's assumption concerning the character of optimum control for the case of small thrust proves invalid.
