NONLINEAR MATRIX ANALYSIS OF DISCRETE ELEMENT STRUCTURES.

Abstract

This study presents two matrix theories: a general matrix theory for nonlinear, discrete bar element structures and a general matrix theory for nonlinear, discrete beam element structures. Both theories use a 'fictitious force' approach to account for large deflections. Numerical examples are worked using both theories. The deflections and critical buckling loads that are calculated using the bar element theory compare favorably with the exact values for the structures in question. The validity of the beam element theory can not be ascertained because of the lack of values for the exact deflections of the structure. (Author)
