FOIL BEARINGS, THEIR GENERAL BEHAVIOR WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE EXTERNALLY PRESSURIZED BEARING,

Abstract

The equations describing the behavior of foil bearings are set forth. Linearized solutions to these equations are obtained. These solutions are used to examine the effects of foil stiffness and lubricant compressibility. Finally, the behavior of a foil of finite stiffness in the vicinity of a pressurizing groove is analyzed in detail, and the results of this analysis are used to design externally pressurized foil bearings.
