AN APPROXIMATE EXPRESSION FOR THE STRESS CONCENTRATION IN A CIRCULAR CYLINDRICAL SHELL WITH A CIRCULAR CUTOUT.

Abstract

The analytic solution presented in the report was shown to be comparable with the previously published numerical solution based on the method of least square error. Recapitulating, the fundamental assumption in the Donnell theory of thin shells was that R/t > or equal to 10, and to consider the cutout as circular required that rho sub o/R<1/2. The problem of determining the stresses in a circular cylinder with a small circular cutout essentially has been solved both numerically and analytically. In a forthcoming report the problem of the intersection of two thin circular cylindrical shells will be considered. (Author)
