FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR A POSITION LOCATOR.

Abstract

This report describes the results of a program to design, fabricate and test a breadboard model of a self contained Man Position Locator in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the concept and to show that actual hardware would be capable of performing in a reasonable and useful manner and with requisite accuracy. The Man Position Locator utilizes a pedometer step sensor, an accelerom eter for measuring a step parameter which would provide for variations in pace length, a computer to receive these signals and convert them into map coordinates and two counter type indicators, one for each map ordinate, to indicate position. It was demonstrated under many different types of terrain and ground surface that a man's position could be measured to accuracies of 2% and better. It was also recommended that the device be developed into a combat useful package.
