Abstract
Studies were conducted by aircraft and drifting research stations in 1956 of the Northern Maritime Route with a view toward opening the Arctic regions of the USSR. The entire Arctic Ocean was covered by reconnaissance studies, and data on the distribution of Atlantic and Pacific Ocean water in the Polar Basin and the character of the ice cover were collected. Extensive subterranean mountain ranges were traced, but the deep-water Arctic Basin on the Canadian Arctic Archipelago was not checked. A study of this area would yield information bearing on the general tectonic scheme of the entire North Arctic Ocean. The question of a connection between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans was studied by test borings of the Beaufort Sea bottom, and life was found on the ocean surface. Observations were made on thawing, growth, disintegration of floating marine ice, and the formation of crevasses. The investigations provided data concerning the regularities of iceberg formation and their drift paths. Radar observations of the aurora were also conducted.
