THREE BRANCHES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RESEARCH.

Abstract

This paper outlines three current approaches to the problems of artificial intelligence research--simulation of human behavior in 'human-like' ways; achievement of efficient problem-solving behavior using techniques and procedures not necessarily like those used by humans; and improvement in the relationship between man and machine by an alteration in the division of labor between the two and by advances in man/machine communication. Examples are given of artificial-intelligence systems embodying the underlying principles of each branch. Some of the problems that remain to be solved in artificial intelligence research are specified. (Author)
