TURBULENCE CRITERIA DERIVED FROM CONVENTIONAL ATMOSPHERIC MEASUREMENTS,
Abstract
Measurements of wind speeds and temperatures from the television tower at Cedar Hill, Texas, are used in the evaluation of three criteria of turbulence. Expressions are derived which relate these calculated values to average turbulence values determined from measurements of the vertical component of turbulence at five levels on the tower. The closest correlation between turbulence and the calculated criteria is achieved with a nondimensional criterion which is introduced in the study. It is suggested that the expression, relating turbulence and the N criterion, will have application to other geographical areas, provided that local effects are reflected in the kinetic energy gradient term. Extension of the N criterion to clear air turbulence is considered feasible. (Author)
