RESEARCH STUDIES ON THERMIONIC CONVERTERS, EMITTER SHELL PHASE.

Abstract

Eighteen converters were fabricated, 16 with the doublewalled emitter-shell geometry. After the solution of a number of fabrication problems, a converter was constructed which produced power output equivalent to electrically heated converters. This converter was successfully life tested for 1000 hours at an average emitter temperature of 1235? Centigrade. A second converter was life tested at an emitter temperature of 1320? Centigrade for 202 hours before failing. A converter was subjected to thermal cycling from -40? Centigrade to +1400? Centigrade in less than 5 minutes without failure in accordance with the contract requirements. Permeation testing was carried out on an aluminum oxide sample in a fossil-fuel environment. The principle permeating gas was shown to be oxygen. Tests on pyrolytic silicon carbide were being conducted as the reporting period closed.
