AMPLITUDE-MODULATED END-FIRE ARRAY,

Abstract

The directivity formula of a very long end-fire array made up of a continuous line of isotropic radiators is derived, assuming a sine-modulated current amplitude along the axis and constant phase difference from element to element. Sample calculations are given for an array of 40 wavelengths. The directivity of the array is found to depend on the phase velocity and the modulation coefficient; and the optimum directivity of this array is found to be greater than that of a Hansen-Woodyard array of the same length.
