SOME ERRORS IN CALCULATING THE CENTROID OF AN UNPERTURBED WULLENWEBER BEAM PATTERN,

Abstract

The Wullenweber beam pattern is assumed to be given by (sin z)/z. This function is sampled at a series of equi-spaced angular points and the sample values quantized in digital format. The mean of the distribution is used to locate the maximum of the function (or the direction of arrival of the received ray), and the case in which the angular sample points are non-symmetrically spaced about the direction of arrival of the ray is considered in detail. Curves showing the errors in the arrival angle, as estimated by the mean of the digitized pattern, are given as a function of the skew between the sampling pattern and the beam pattern for various numbers of sampling points and quantization levels. The probability distribution of the error for small numbers of samples is also developed. (Author)
