Hypersonic Turning with Constant Bank Angle Control

Abstract

The report presents the elements of a model for predicting the turning trajectories of hypersonic reentry gliders by approximate closed form solutions. Vehicle control is assumed to be exercised by varying the angle of attack and bank angle. In this investigation the control variables are assumed to be constant for each particular trajectory, but the lift-to-drag ratio (L/D) was varied from 1.0 to 4.0 and the bank angle was permitted to become as large as 90 deg. Approximate closed form solutions are compared with earlier results of a study of minimum energy hypersonic turns.
