SCATTERING OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES BY A HELICAL SHEATH CYLINDER,

Abstract

The problem of scattering from a helical sheath has been investigated. A harmonic series solution is obtained for the case with TE-mode incidence. Due to the anisotropic nature of the boundary, both TE mode and TM mode are present in the scattered field and the transmitted field. The expressions for the total scattering cross section, the back scattering cross section and the current density distribution are also obtained. Some numerical results are presented for a helical structure with a radius that is small or moderate in comparison with the wavelength. A strange behavior as the pitch angle approaches pi/2 is found. The nature of this strange behavior is discussed in detail. (Author)
