THE EFFECT OF VALUE OF SUCCESS UPON THE EXPECTATION OF SUCCESS,
Abstract
A series of 5 studies have been designed to determine the effect of desire upon the expectation of success. Two of the 5 studies have been conducted and the data analyzed. The results of the two studies show that desire has a positive distorting effect upon expectations of success but also that as desire increases the degree of distortion decreases. Two of the remaining three studies have been designed to complete the negative curve by showing that with further increases in desire (importance of success on the task) there will be a negative distortion of success expectation. The remaining study will move importance of success to a critical point with the purpose of demonstrating that the negative relationship between desire and expectation changes into a positive relationship. With the completion of the five studies it is our hope that we will have resolved the conflict between two current theories, one claiming a negative relationship and the other a positive relationship between desire and expectation of success.
