PILOT PRODUCTION AND EVALUATION OF TANTALUM ALLOY SHEET.

Abstract

This quarterly report describes the melting and fabrication of two 4 inch diameter T-222 double arc melted ingots. Ingot breakdown by both side forging and upset forging was investigated. Both procedures yielded essentially defect free slab suitable for rolling to sheet. The success of side forging, however, implied that large ingots could be fabricated to slab without requiring the cutting of relatively small lengths for upsetting. In addition to this, side forging of large ingots would produce a slab shape requiring less trim conditioning in preparation for rolling to sheet than that required on an upset slab. Because of these considerations, the second 4 inch diameter ingot was side forged to slab in preparation for rolling to sheet. (Author)
