UAL/FAA ATC RADAR BEACON ALTITUDE REPORTING TEST

Abstract

The National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center monitored 186 flights of 25 different United Air Lines Boeing 727 aircraft and 17 flights of three different Douglas DC-8F aircraft, all equipped with Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System (ATCRBS) automatic altitude reporting capability. The participating aircraft were equipped with two different types of automatic altitude reporting configurations, and two different types of ground decoding and display systems were used. Information was gathered on adequacy of the ATCRBS pressure altitude transmission medium, the technical integrity of the two specific decoding and display systems, and correspondence between the pilot altitude display in the cockpit and the radar beacon altitude display at the ground facility. The data analyzed and controller comments on data received are included along with review notes.
