THE EPISTEMOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF MACHINE INTELLIGENCE.

Abstract

Machine intelligence is studied from the standpoint of design. The elements of system design and specific problems of intelligent machine design are presented. Several possible definitions of machine intelligence are discussed. The relationship of physical events to information processing by machines is analyzed and a vector model of intelligent machines is suggested. Overall problems of machine organization are examined and an algebraic theory of machines is tentatively presented as is an alternative model of machines based on the notion of an organized complexity. The possible role of machine intelligence theory in the interpretation of certain types of psychological phenomena is suggested. (Author)
