DEVELOPMENT OF BUOY-MOUNTED OCEANOGRAPHIC SENSORS (BMOS).

Abstract

The activities of this program are directed specifically towards the development of oceanographic sensors capable of continuous reliable operation for one year in situ. The program has three aspects. (1) the study of existing devices such as power sources, sensors, and the PARALOC oscillator; (2) the problems related to marine fouling; (3) the design or redesign as the case may be of circuitry designed specifically to fit the requirements of the BMOS program. These requirements are that the electronics must have a rapid warm-up time, low power, be physically small, and be extremely reliable. The interrogate circuitry, for example, must have fail-safe characteristics in that under no circumstances will one particular telemetry channel remain ON when required to be OFF. The last aspect of this program is the mechanical design of sensor packages, a framework on which the packages will be mounted, and a clamp mechanism which will hold the framework firmly attached to the mooring cable of the buoy system.
