ASYMPTOTIC FORM OF THE ELECTRON CAPTURE CROSS SECTION IN THE CLASSICAL APPROXIMATION,

Abstract

It has been shown that if the protons are regarded as distinguishable particles the asymptotic form of the cross section for H(+) + H(1s) to H(1s) + H(+) in the (nonrelativistic) First Born and distorted wave approximations is Q(1s-1s) = 2Mpi(a-squared) /3m (E-cubed), where E is the energy of the incident proton in atomic units, M is its mass and m is the mass of the electron. A simple classical treatment of this problem is given.
