STABILITY INVESTIGATION OF TILTING-PAD BEARINGS. I. THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS.

Abstract

Tilting-pad journal bearings exhibit excellent stability characteristics under ordinary circumstances, but under certain extreme operating conditions they may develop some form of self-excited whirl instability. This first interim report presents the fundamental equations governing the tilting-pad bearing configuration, in which the system geometry, kinematics and Reynolds equation are developed in detail. This report presents a method of analysis of the stability of this type of bearing based on the small perturbation technique. (Author)
