THE APPLICATION OF THE BERNOULLI THEOREM IN ZONES OF SEPARATION (L'APPLICATION DU THEOREME DE BERNOULLI DANS LES ZONES DE DECOLLEMENT),

Abstract

The thesis illustrates a typical case of separation at an abrupt change in boundary geometry (i.e., at the edge of circular disk, at the edge of the wall, and at the beginning of the abrupt expansion). Without separation the streamline at the edge should have an infinite curvature accompanied by an infinite pressure gradient. This unrealistic situation leads to the conclusion that separation must occur. As a matter of fact, if the radius of curvature of the limiting streamline is small, as in the case of the disk or of the wall, the initial separation point will possess a low pressure.
