QM Elastomer Contract

Abstract

Hydrogen-containing oxetanes have been successfully prepared for the first time by the photolysis of hexafluoroacetone with ethylene and vinylidene fluoride. In both cases polymeric products, in addition to oxetanes, were found. All of the polymeric products isolated to date are of low molecular weight. The reaction offers promise of affording a new route to linear polyethers. A new elastomer system has been discovered involving the condensation of a fluorine-containing diol with a fluorocarbon diene. This product is presently being characterized but its low Tg (-57 deg C) is very encouraging. Attempts to modify the C3F6/ CF2= CH2 system by incorporation of termonomers have not proved successful. Attempts to use the thermal cycloaddition of fluorocarbons as a polymer forming reaction have proved unsuccessful.
