A COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR FORECASTING THE WIND DRIFT OF SEA ICE.

Abstract

The theory and equations for forecasting the wind drift of sea ice, as previously developed by several researchers, are being used in the forecasting of that component of seaice drift. The existing equations are modified and programmed for use with a computer to produce a forecast of wind drift, thus permitting rapidly made forecasts over large areas. Applicability and limitations, ways of handling other factors, i.e. permanent currents and melting and freezing, and methods for general improvement of the programs are discussed. The programs developed are useful as research tools and as applied to forecasting. (Author)
