SIGNAL DISTORTION IN A FREQUENCY DIVIDER,

Abstract

When a narrow band modulated signal excites a frequency division system, such as a chain of flip-flops, the low frequency output of the chain tends to exhibit the same bandwidth as the input signal. When the output of the divider is multiplied back up to the original frequency, the phase modulation of the original signal is recovered, together with distortion components whose magnitude depends on the details of the division process, in particular, on the percentage bandwidth of the signal at each step. A means for estimating the effective bandwidth of a phase on frequency modulated signal is developed and used to produce quantitative estimates of the signal degradation which results from a frequency division process.
