EXPERIMENTAL MODEL STUDIES OF THE DYNAMIC VELOCITY FLUCTUATIONS EXISTING IN THE AIR WAKE OF AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER. PART 1: TEXT

Abstract

Experimental investigations were undertaken in a water tunnel to measure the dynamic horizontal and vertical velocity fluctuations existing in the air wake of a carrier and encountered by landing aircraft. A description of the instrumentation developed, and an analysis of the methods employed in converting data to pitch transfer functions (amplitude and phase) is given together with the determination of power spectra information. Conclusions regarding instrumentation, test data interpretation and operational procedures for the carrier and aircraft are presented.
