A CRITICAL SURVEY OF THE METHODS FOR ANALYSIS OF SPHERICAL SHELLS,

Abstract

This report presents the result of a survey of methods for analysis of spherical shells of uniform thickness that are subjected to axisymmetrical edge moments and forces. The methods fall into two main categories, namely Analytical analyses and Numerical analyses. Influence coefficients of arbitrary spherical segments for the practical range of shell parameters are evaluated by different methods and the results are compared. Also, the influence functions or internal influence coefficients that describe the variation of the meridional bending moments due to edge disturbances are given. Finally, the overall bending characteristics of spherical shells are discussed. (Author)
