THE EFFECT OF DEFORMATION AND HEAT TREATMENT ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE TI-6AL-6V-2SN-4ZR-1FE-1CU ALLOY,
Abstract
The effect of deformation and heat treatment variables on the mechanical properties of a promising experimental alloy, Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn-4Zr-1Fe-1Cu, was determined utilizing material from a commercially procured ingot. Forging, solution, and aging temperatures and aging times were varied and the resultant notched and unnotched tensile and impact properties were obtained to establish the highest yield strength obtainable in combination with adequate ductility, as defined by Specification MIL-T-46038. This optimum combination of properties was obtained at a yield strength level of 200 ksi, with an elongation of 9 percent, a reduction of area of 26 percent, and Charpy V-notch impact energy of 6 foot-pounds at -40 F.
