THE SYSTEMS APPROACH TO FIRE PROTECTION PROBLEMS: AN OVERVIEW,

Abstract

This paper presents an overview of the systems approach, which as used here, entails the employment of 'scientific method' in considering those aspects of a system that influence its overall performance. Tools and techniques (e.g., models, simulation, mathematical statistics and probability, human factors, and cost-effectiveness) for assisting those concerned with making decisions about systems are discussed briefly, and the suggestion is made that this approach be given consideration as an aid in resolving some of the problems found in fire protection engineering work.
