LASER MATERIALS RESEARCH

Abstract

The report summarizes the progress made from 1 July 1963 to 15 December 1963. During this period work was carried out on the following: evaluation of the optical quality of synthetic rubies, investigation of the 2E levels of ruby, the optical absorption spectrum of ruby, investigation of excited-state absorption in gadolinium-activated glass, spectroscopy of ytterbiumactivated laser glass, the synthesis of laser glasses, particularly of gadolinium and europium activated glasses, investigation of the light emission produced by double-pulsing of flash lamps, continued studies on optical pumping using exploding wire light sources, fundamental investigations of pumping light sources, and observations of effects due to high intensity laser beams.
