THE SCIENCE OF GEOGRAPHY.
Abstract
The central section of the report attempts to analyze the interests and competences among geographers that contribute to inter-disciplinary progress in studying the great man-environment system. This analysis is presented in the form of discussions of four different problem areas considered illustrative of the growing edge of geography. The four problem areas are: physical geography, cultural geography, political geography, and location theory. Within each problem area one or more research clusters are found. These are groups with common research interests whose members habitually communicate with one another. For each problem area the Committee evaluates the significance of present and foreseeable research problems, the connection of current working problems with the great overriding problem of man and environment, the relation of the problem area to growing edges in other sciences, and research opportunities considered to be unfulfilled.
