THE IMPACT OF THE COMPUTER ON SCHOOL SYSTEMS.

Abstract

The term 'computer' should be understood, in an educational context, to include automatic data processing equipment of all kinds. Although a relatively small number of school systems now use computers, it is estimated that these systems enroll a very large proportion of the total school population. The principal applications of computers have been in the areas of administration, pupil personnel and guidance systems, research and evaluation, and instruction. At first used largely for record-keeping and related transactions, the most important result of EDP systems has been the byproduct of data for research and evaluation as well as for projection and simulation in decision-making and planning. Instruction in data processing itself, especially in computer programming, has opened the door to the use of the computer as a moderating and controlling device in instruction itself--uses which have only begun to be explored. Despite the progress which has been made in educational use of computers, we have much to do, especially in exploiting the potentials of integrated systems involving several branches and levels of government.
