A COMPUTER STUDY OF UNDERWATER SOUND RAYS AND REFRACTION EFFECTS,

Abstract

The thesis documents the development, testing and early use of a computer program which plots sound rays and calculates a continuous value for the refractive anomaly. The first chapter contains a brief discussion of the meaning of the refractive anomaly A. Chapter 2 and 3 contain a functional description of the program which uses the second derivative of the velocity with respect to depth as a description of the medium. In order to test the program, computer results are compared with mathematical results predicted by theory (Chapter 4) and the two are shown to be in excellent agreement. Chapter 5 contains a detailed study of ray and refractive anomaly plots made with the computer program. Finally, Chapter 6 contains a summary. (Author)
