ON THE RETROGRADE MOTION OF A LOW PRESSURE ARC DISCHARGE IN A TRANSVERSE MAGNETIC FIELD.

Abstract

A comprehensive and up-to-date literature survey is presented on the unorthodox motion of a low pressure arc discharge in a transverse magnetic field. As a result of the present experimental and theoretical investigation additional information is presented, and a new hypothesis, based on a combination of the Hall effect, evaporation of the cathode, and the electrode surface condition, is proposed in an effort to explain the retrograde motion of an arc discharge.
