PROPERTIES OF AN ACTIVE OPTICAL SYSTEM,

Abstract

An active optical configuration is described that permits high-precision detection of targets at a predetermined range. Sources of high radiance are required and the degree of range precision obtainable depends on the availability of high performance components. The detection system has a limited range of sensitivity in the region where target detection is required. By making this range of sensitivity small, the system can be made insensitive to natural fog and clouds for short range applications. A geometric analysis is made of the system's clear weather performance. Additional analysis indicates performance in fog. Some applications are suggested. (Author)
