CENIZA-ARENA CLEANUP IN SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA: OPERATIONAL ASPECTS AS RELATED TO NUCLEAR WEAPON FALLOUT DECONTAMINATION

Abstract

The continuing eruptions of Volcan Irazu and the consequent deposition of volcanic debris on the city of San Jose, Costa Rica, offered a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of the physical effects of fallout-like particles (ceniza-arena) deposited in urban areas. Detailed records of ceniza-arena deposition and removal from San Jose were tabulated and analyzed. The magnitude and problems of decontaminating a fallout contaminated city were illustrated (except for the complicacy of radiation) in the San Jose ceniza-arena cleanup operations.
