A BALLOON-BORNE OPTICAL AEROSOL AND CLOUD DETECTOR.

Abstract

A balloon-borne aerosol and cloud detector is proposed for obtaining synoptic data on the vertical distribution of cloud and aerosol layers to a height of 30 km. The instrument measures the intensity of light scattered from a sampling volume and, if a size distribution of the particulates is assumed, their concentration can be determined. Various size distributions of hazes and clouds are considered. Their contribution, as well as that of the molecular atmosphere, to the signal detected by the instrument is calculated. A description of a laboratory model of the proposed instrument is included. (Author)
