AN INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECTS OF DYNAMIC LOADS ON THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF SOILS.
Abstract
Soils supporting the foundations of structures subjected to vibrating loads often exhibit strength and elastic properties which are considerably different from the properties of the same soil under static conditions. The purpose of this investigation was to develop an apparatus which could be used for laboratory investigations of the effects of dynamic stress conditions on the shear strength of a soil. An attempt was also made to determine the effects of static shear stresses, confining pressure, and the amplitude of vibration on the velocity of stress wave propagation in a soil sample.
