A LOW DENSITY UNIVERSAL INSTABILITY,

Abstract

It is shown that an ion acoustic wave in a low pressure, non-uniform plasma propagating almost perpendicular to the external magnetic field, is made unstable when finite Debye length is introduced. In connection with this problem, the WKB method, extended to complex potential, as well as the meaning of localized dispersion relations are considered in detail. It is pointed out that, while the localized frequency and growth rate depend upon the slope of the profile, the true values depend sensitively on the curvature of the density profile. (Author)
