DEVELOPMENT OF WELDING PROCEDURES FOR THE FABRICATION OF THICK PLATE TITANIUM ALLOY.

Abstract

The results of this investigation indicates that mechanized out-of-chamber welding of thick plate titanium alloy in the flat position can be accomplished without undue difficulty, provided that care is exercised in the preparation of the plates for welding and in the control of the welding operation and that a trailing shield of suitable design is used in the operation. Additional work in out-of-chamber mechanized welding of thick plate titanium is required to establish appropriate welding conditions for specific alloys intended for use in submarine hull construction and to assess the properties of weldments produced with these alloys.
