PRIMARY IRRITATION EVALUATION PROGRAM

Abstract

Studies were conducted to classify chemical compounds according to primary skin- and eye-irritant effects on albino rabbits so that development research can proceed without undue hazard to personnel. Chemicals received for toxicologic evaluation were tested for primary skin irritation. From results of the tests, the respective chemicals were classified according to established 'Primary Skin Irritation Categories'. All compounds which produced no skin irritation and other compounds of special interest were tested further for injury to the eyes. Chemicals are classified according to established 'Eye Injury Categories'.
