CONVEX POLYNOMIAL APPROXIMATION.

Abstract

The problem considered is that of obtaining polynomial approximations to continuous functions or empirical data in such a way that the approximating polynomials are convex in some prescribed interval. This problem arises naturally in connection with data smoothing and was in fact suggested to the author by a problem requiring the calculation of derivatives from data.
